Lersi (Rishi, or Ṛṣi) amulets are a well‑known part of Thai folk belief and Buddhist culture. The Lersi in Thailand are revered spiritual ascetic hermits or yogis who have achieved high levels of spiritual attainment through meditation, magic, and herbal medicine. They are believed to possess supernatural powers, playing an important role in Thai spiritual practices. There are numerous commonly attributed powers which are associated with this form of amuletic magick.

Protection from harm: to ward off accidents, assaults, or misfortune. Attraction of good luck and prosperity – Some believers say the amulet draws favourable opportunities, such as success in business, exams, or gambling.
Health and vitality: they thought to boost stamina, speed recovery from illness, or protect against disease and a reminder to stay mindful of wellbeing.
Spiritual guidance: Because many Lersi amulets feature squares of robes (such as the one featured) of revered monks. Some wearers feel the amulet helps them stay focused on moral conduct, meditation, or ethical or moral decision‑making.
Deterrent from evil spirits: The Lersi amulet is believed to keep malevolent spirits, ghosts, or “black magick” at bay. This belief often ties into broader Thai concepts of phi (spirits) and khwan (the soul).
Career Advancement: boosting of confidence, leadership ability, and favourable outcomes at work.
Good Luck & Fortune: attraction of prosperity, success in business, exams, or lottery draws.
There are many real‑world anecdotes which illustrate the generative and protective powers of Lersi amulets. Here are just three. The Truck Driver’s Tale: A long‑haul driver from Chiang Mai swore his Tiger‑Eye Lersi saved him from a severe accident on a treacherous mountain road. He credits the amulet’s protective powers and now carries a spare Lersi amulet for his fellow drivers. The Student Success Story: A university student in Bangkok kept a Lotus‑Bloom Lersi in her backpack during exam week. She reported of having acquired a mysterious heightened focus and passed all subjects with top marks, attributing part of her success to the amulet’s mental clarity boost. A Business Expansion: An entrepreneur in Phuket purchased a Royal Seal Lersi before launching a new resort. Within six months, the venture exceeded revenue targets, and he attributes the amulet’s influence on leadership confidence and favourable negotiations.
This charming Lersi amulet made by Ajarn Suthep, the countryside sorcerer, has strong protective powers. I had the great privilege of meeting and experiencing magickal rituals with Ajarn Suthep during my fourth pilgrimage which is fully documented in my new book Thai Tattoo Magick – The Initiatory Practices of the Thai Buddhist Magicians which is out now on Inner Traditions.
